When I first learned about the Freedom House Ambulance Service, I was stunned. Why hadn’t I heard about this before?
In the late 1960s, a group of Black men and women in Pittsburgh trained to become the first paramedics in America — a revolutionary idea at the time. They saved lives, built a model for emergency medicine as we know it today, and did it all while facing systemic racism and resistance from every angle. Their story should be legendary. Instead, it’s barely a footnote.
The First Save is our way of changing that.
This short film is a fictional story, but it’s grounded in historical truth. It follows Alexander Carter, a former Freedom House paramedic, as he shares the story of his first life-or-death call with his young son. It’s a story about legacy, about remembering what matters, and about honoring the people who paved the way.
We’re not backed by a studio. This film is being made by a small group of passionate artists who believe that stories like this need to be told — and told with care.
That’s where you come in.
We’re raising funds to produce The First Save with the quality and integrity it deserves. Your support goes directly to paying our cast and crew, renting locations, securing permits, and bringing this vision to life.
If this story moves you, if you believe in the power of film to preserve overlooked history, please consider contributing to our campaign. Every donation, every share, every bit of encouragement helps.
Let’s bring The First Save to the screen — together.
How to Support The First Save on Seed&Spark
The First Save Short Film Fundraiser is designed to provide financial support to filmmakers who are ready to bring their visions to life. Here’s how it works:
Visit Our Campaign Page: You’ll see a video introducing the project, a story section that explains what the film is about, and a breakdown of how we plan to use the funds.
Choose How You Want to Support: You can contribute in two main ways:
Make a Financial Contribution. Click the green “Make a Pledge” button to donate any amount. All funds go directly to production costs like crew, gear, locations, and post-production.
Follow the Campaign. Even if you can't give right now, clicking the “Follow” button helps us unlock bonus support from Seed&Spark — we need at least 250 followers to be eligible for certain grants and opportunities.
(Note: Seed&Spark uses Stripe to process payments — it’s safe and secure.)
Get Perks. Depending on how much you give, you’ll receive perks — like behind-the-scenes access, a shout-out in the credits, or exclusive film merch.
Share the Campaign. Not everyone can give, but spreading the word makes a huge difference. Share our link with friends, family, or on social media to help us reach more supporters.
If you have questions about the platform or how to give, feel free to message us. Thanks so much for helping us tell this story. We can’t make it without you. ❤️
